On November 26 at 1:55 PM, the Inner Mongolia Huadian Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. successfully ignited its industrial natural gas blending demonstration project in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. This project marks the first instance in China where industrial boilers are using natural gas blended with 20% green hydrogen.
The demonstration project utilizes a model that combines "green electricity to produce green hydrogen" with "industrial applications of green hydrogen." It incorporates a renewable energy capacity of 120,000 kilowatts from wind power and 80,000 kilowatts from solar energy, supplemented by 20,000 kilowatts of energy storage. Set to commence operations in December 2023, the project is expected to generate 552 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and produce 7,800 tons of green hydrogen.
Inner Mongolia Jin'e Bo Fluorochemical Co., Ltd. has established production capacities of 300,000 tons of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, 90,000 tons of anhydrous aluminum fluoride, and 400,000 tons of sulfuric acid annually. Starting in October 2024, the two companies will collaborate to blend the green hydrogen produced by Huadian with natural gas supplied to Jin'e Bo, which will be used in the production of anhydrous hydrofluoric acid.
This demonstration project employs a natural gas blending scheme developed by Academician Tang Shuxian's team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with implementation facilitated by the Zero-Carbon Energy Research Center at Suzhou University of Science and Technology. The project aims for a blending ratio of 20%, capable of utilizing 2,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This approach significantly enhances the combustion and heat transfer efficiency of second-category industrial natural gas while substantially reducing the emissions of pollutants such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.
Industrial natural gas accounts for 42% of total natural gas consumption in China, making the blending of green hydrogen with industrial natural gas pivotal for large-scale adoption of green hydrogen and emissions reductions in industry. This project sets three benchmarks: it is the first successful implementation of industrial natural gas blended with green hydrogen for industrial energy supply in China; it achieves the highest blending ratio of industrial natural gas and green hydrogen; and it boasts a maximum blending capacity of 2,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
