Liquid Filter Bag Sizing Guide

Filter bags are the most purchased item for anyone who has a system with a filter. They are easy to replace, are generally inexpensive, and do their job well! The biggest problem with filter bags is how confusing and overwhelming it can be to find and choose the right one for your application. Between all the different bag & ring materials, sizes, and micron ratings, the options are endless! In this article we will focus on all the different filter bag sizes, since that is usually the first thing users must identify when shopping for filter bags.

Common Filter Bag Sizes

Industrial filter bags have been around for a long time, so companies (at least in the USA) have settled upon a standard sizing system. Liquid filter bag sizing is designed to fit filter bag housings from the most popular brands. In fact, most companies that manufacture filter housings have their own filter bag lines. Below is a chart with the 6 most common filter bag sizes available. Keep in mind that we also offer custom bags from several of our manufacturing partners that are not on our filter bag size guide.

As you can see in the chart, the three most common bag diameters are 7", 4", and 7.5". These will fit just about any filter housings. Each diameter is available in two sizes, with ~16" and 32" being the standards for length. The smaller bags (sizes 3 and 4) are available in shorter lengths of 8" or 14". These small bags are useful in applications that do not require high flow. They can also be used in certain multi-bag filter housings. While bag size is important and must be considered before purchase, micron rating is another vital consideration.

What is Micron Rating?

Microns are not a form of measurement you use everyday. This is because they are so small, items smaller than 40 microns across cannot be seen by the naked eye. A micron is defined as 1 millionth of a meter (or 39 millionths of an inch). It is a unit of measurement so tiny, the only effective way to use it is to measure tiny things. These are things like grains of sand, bacteria, hair, and so on. Filter bags measure the bag perforation in microns. If you get a filter bag rated at 25 microns, it should not allow any particles larger than 25 microns to pass through. Below are some examples to give you an idea of how miniscule this scale is.

What size bag filter housing should I be using? (#2 or #4)

The dimensions and flow rates mentioned in this article are estimates to give an idea for which size bag filter housing may be appropriate for your application. You should always adhere to the technical specifications for your specific filter housing.

There are a few considerations to take into account when choosing the correct bag filter housing size for your application, with two of the most important being flow rate and your site's space constraints.

Virtually all industrial and commercial applications utilize trade size #2 or trade size #4 filters, which correspond with #2 and #4 size filter housings.

    Bag Filter Housing Sizes

A #2 size bag filter housing holds a #2 size liquid filter bag (7-1/16" diameter x 32" length). The entire #2 housing measures approximately 38"-42" tall, and 8"-9" wide. Be sure to take into account the adjustable height of the stand if the housing will be in a confined area.

A #4 size bag filter housing holds a #4 size liquid filter bag (4-1/8" diameter x 14" length). The entire #4 housing measures approximately 21"-23" tall, and 4.5"-5" wide. Again, be sure to take into account the adjustable height of the stand if the housing will be in a confined area.

    Bag Filter Housing Flow Rates

Generally, a #2 single bag filter housing will accommodate a flow rate of up to 100 gallons per minute, and a #4 bag filter housing will usually accommodate up to 40 gallons per minute.

    Standalone Multi-Filter Housings

Generally, a #2 single bag filter housing will accommodate a flow rate of up to 100 gallons per minute, and a #4 bag filter housing will usually accommodate up to 40 gallons per minute. In high flow applicationsorcan be an appropriate solution.

    • A standalone 3 Bag Multi-Filter Housing can accommodate flow rates up to 395 gallons per minute, and utilizes three liquid filter bags at once.
    • A standalone 6 Bag Multi-Filter Housing can accommodate flow rates up to 650 gallons per minute, utilizing six liquid filter bags at once.

    Filtration Skids

A filtration skid system adds the benefit of portability to high flow filtration applications, while increasing the maximum allowable gallons per minute.
    • A #2 size dual bag filter housing skid utilizes two standard #2 size filter housings, plumbed together at the inlet and outlet connections, and typically include ball valves. This type of solution allows for increased flow greater than 100 gpm, while still utilizing a single liquid filter bag in each housing.
    • Multi-Bag Filter Housings can also be utilized on a filtration skid system, allowing for even greater flow rates. For example, a Dual 3-Bag Filter Housing Skid can accommodate flow rates up to 800 gpm.
    • Rental Filtration Skid Systems are also available for short and long-term leases. Speak with a PRM Filtration expert to learn more.
