my Dad probably put this in 25 years ago - well water, 1" pvc line .... why the filter hangs in the open like this I have no idea .... but that filter is old enough that its tough to get changed and the stress on 25 year old PVC ...... Virtual-world - I agree that the cost of the filter pipes are prohibitive but I didn't had much of a choice when I was asked to go for it. There are genuine cases where in the loose sand/silt has closed the well. In my case I was told that there is loose soil in the half way mark and hence I didn't want to take that risk. There are different view points and few folks say that filter pipe wouldn't completely prevent a bore well from disintegrating, so on & so forth.
Filter pipes can absolutely be bought independently. In most of the cases the bore well guys don't give you an option and will tell you only at the last moment that filter pipes are necessary. In such cases you have to go with whomever they suggest us (that's what happened in my case). Anyone who is planning to go for a bore well rigging should check for the rates for filter pipe from whole sale dealers, bargain and let them know that you may need it on so&so date. In my opinion, buying & installing it directly will at least save you 20% of the total cost. You can go for the brands you like too. In my case they installed Monarch even though I was inclined towards Finolex.
