Introduction--What is Graphite Electrode?

Graphite electrodes are mainly made of petroleum coke and needle coke as raw materials and coal pitch as a binding agent. They are made through calcination, batching, kneading, pressing, roasting, graphitization and machining. They release electric energy in the form of arc in an electric arc furnace. Conductors that heat and melt the charge can be divided into ordinary power graphite electrodes, high power graphite electrodes and ultra-high power graphite electrodes according to their quality indicators.


The main raw material for graphite electrode production is petroleum coke. A small amount of pitch coke can be added to ordinary power graphite electrodes. The sulfur content of both petroleum coke and pitch coke cannot exceed 0.5%. Needle coke is also required when producing high-power or ultra-high-power graphite electrodes. The main raw material for aluminum anode production is petroleum coke, and the sulfur content is controlled to be no more than 1.5% to 2%. Petroleum coke and pitch coke should comply with relevant national quality standards.

(1) Processing forms of graphite materials

There are three main forms of graphite electrode processing: pressurized vibration method, CNC automatic forming method and mechanical processing method.

a. Pressurized vibration method: The pressurized vibration method requires special machine tools, and the shape of the electrode master mold is opposite to that of the electrode. The graphite material and the forming tool are placed relative to each other during processing, leaving a certain gap. The machining fluid mixed with water and abrasive is injected into it. While passing through the machining fluid, ultrasonic vibrations occur to the graphite and the forming tool. Under the action of abrasive impact, graphite is peeled off in minute amounts to form the required shape. The abrasive is SiC, B4C or diamond. The coarser the abrasive, the faster the processing speed. The machine tool uses sealed type and water curtain type for processing. Suitable for EDM processing in mass production situations.

b. CNC automatic forming method: CNC automatic forming method requires a special graphite electrode forming machine, which adopts CNC method and has an automatic tool changing device, which can accommodate multiple tools. In order to improve the processing environment, the processing graphite electrode is surrounded by a water curtain to prevent graphite dust from spreading around. In addition, wet machining methods can also be used, using water-soluble cutting fluid to prevent tool wear and graphite dust from flying. The machine tool has a high-performance filtering device that can separate cutting fluid and graphite chips, ensuring long-term continuous processing. It is an ideal special equipment for graphite electrode processing, and is suitable for mold electrode processing. However, its price is relatively high and its application in China is not yet common.

c. Mechanical processing method: Mechanical processing method is the main method used by general domestic mold production units.

Graphite materials can be processed by turning, milling, drilling and grinding. In addition, graphite materials are prone to flying dust during mechanical processing, which has adverse effects on processing equipment and operators.

(2) Processing procedures for graphite materials

a. Graphite immersed in oil. Before machining, graphite materials should be immersed in engine oil for dozens of hours to allow the oil to penetrate into the graphite materials so that dust will not fly during machining and a smoother surface can be obtained.

b. Paint and line. After the electrode is rough-machined on the surface, a thin layer of white paint is sprayed on the scribed surface and then scribed, so that the lines are clear and easy to machine.
