The National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the General Administration of Market Regulation, the National Energy Administration, and other relevant departments have recently issued a "Special Action Plan for Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction in the Steel Industry." The plan aims to further unlock the potential for energy conservation and carbon reduction in the steel industry, as well as expedite the transition to more efficient energy use equipment.
The steel industry is a crucial foundational sector of the national economy, but it also accounts for significant energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. According to this action plan, it is projected that by 2024-2025, approximately 20 million tons of standard coal will be saved and around 53 million tons of carbon dioxide will be reduced through implementing energy conservation measures and upgrading energy usage equipment within the steel industry.
Furthermore, by 2030, this action plan sets out goals to enhance overall energy efficiency within key processes of the steel industry. It also aims to achieve advanced levels of efficiency with main energy-consuming equipment while significantly reducing comprehensive energy consumption per ton of steel produced. Additionally, efforts will focus on optimizing our current energy structure while making breakthroughs in advanced technologies such as blast furnace oxygen enrichment technology and hydrogen metallurgy technology. Ultimately these actions are intended to drive forward green initiatives leading towards low-carbon development within this vital sector.
